Mammogram Party FAQ

A recent mammogram party in March with two attendees and the mammogram tech hostess

Q:  Are mammogram parties free?  Does it cost more than a normally scheduled screening?
A:  No, they are not free.  We will bill your health insurance, and you are responsible for any out of pocket expenses.  They do not cost any more than a normal screening.  If this is your first mammogram and you are uninsured or underinsured, you may be eligible for funding by the BCHC program.  Call 1-800-410-6266 for more information.

Q:  Can anyone come?
A:  Participants in the mammogram party should meet the clinical guidelines for this screening.  Women who are eligible are 40 years or older, with no current symptoms.  Our guidelines follow those of  the American Cancer Society and most other breast cancer organizations that women age 40 and older should be screened with annual mammography.  We strongly disagree with the recent recommendations given by the United States Preventative Services Task Force.  Please view our response in a TV interview and in the Anchorage Daily News at http://www.provimaging.com/news-room/bid/28659/Providence-Imaging-Center-Response-to-USPSTF-Recommendations

Others are welcome to attend, but the refreshments are provided for actual registered participants.

Q:  How do I know if the friends I invite are due for their mammogram?  Is it advisable to wait, or to come in earlier than one year prior if they've already had a screening?
A:  A screening is recommended once a year, but there is no clinical reason why you can't come in a month earlier than you are due.  We suggest you check with your insurance carrier to see if there are any penalties for coming in earlier than one year.  For example, Medicare will cover the cost of a screening if the appointment is 11 months or more after the previous appointment.  Give us a call if you think you are coming back too soon for your mammogram.

Q:  Is the actual procedure any different than a screening I would get at your Center during the day?
A:  No, the procedure you are having is exactly the same.  The appointments are consecutive, so you have time to socialize when you are not in the exam room.  Gowns and warm robes are provided, with changing rooms and lockers.

Q:  Can I get a diagnostic mammogram at the party?
A:  Currently, we do not offer diagnostic mammograms at these events.  A radiologist must be present for diagnostic testing, and is generally not available after-hours.

Q:  Will I find out my results before I leave the party?
A:  No, the results won't be available at the party.  Results will be sent to the healthcare provider(s) you identify within 3-5 business days, and a letter will be mailed to you as well.

Q:  If there are additional tests recommended, will they be done at the party?
A:  No, we will contact your healthcare provider with the recommendations.  Occasionally, additional views or a breast ultrasound may be suggested to help us examine an area of concern more closely.

Q:  Do I need to bring anything, or do anything in advance?
A:  Just bring yourself and a desire to have fun.  If you have a previous mammogram that you'd like our radiologist to compare to, bring that (CD or film is fine) or arrange for us to get if from the last facility you visited.  The person who has arranged for your party will be asked to provide us a list of the attendees.  Each attendee should then give us a call at 212-3151 (or toll-free at 888-458-3151) to schedule and register for the event.  Please have your billing information ready.

Q:  Can we bring our own refreshments?
A:  Appetizers are provided for registered participants, along with several non-alcoholic beverage choices for your enjoyment.  Please refrain from bringing your own alcoholic beverages, as we are committed to everyone's safety.

Q:  What is the theme of the party?
A:  In short, fun!  There are a lot of pink and other breast cancer themed decorations, and a "Girls Night Out" and "No men, amen" theme, which you are certain to enjoy.

Q:  Why are you offering these parties?
A:  The hope is that women who are anxious will come with their friends, and see that it is not a difficult experience at all.  And why not have a little fun while addressing your health?
