Providence Imaging Center (PIC) has incorporated a new 64 slice CT scanner, offering the latest technology and imaging speed to Alaskan clinicians and their patients, conveniently located on the Providence Hospital campus in an outpatient setting.
The new scanner, installed on April 14, replaces a GE 16 slice workhorse scanner that performed well for over three years.
According to Karen Hanrahan, CT Supervisor, the GE LightSpeed® VCT delivers high quality images with lowered radiation dose. The system automatically regulates radiation output, using only the amount necessary for the specific anatomy being scanned. "Using the minimum effective dose for CT imaging is a major condition of any upgrade we do. And I know it is a concern for patients and their healthcare providers," states Karen.
PIC's CT technologists, with over 40 years of combined CT experience, have adjusted quickly to the new machine (pictured). "Because it is a GE, we are familiar with how it works. The decrease in scan time for the patient is dramatic. We can already see an improvement in image quality," states Karen.
According to Jonathan Coyle, Providence radiologist, "This new state-of-the-art CT scanner offers the advantages of speed and resolution that will significantly improve visualization of disease and accuracy of diagnoses."
